Naadam Festival

Mongolia's biggest festival: wrestling, horse racing and archery, the 'three manly games', with an opening ceremony at the National Stadium.

Naadam is Mongolia's national holiday and the high point of the summer. The main festival opens on 11 July at the National Sports Stadium in Ulaanbaatar with a parade of horsemen, soldiers and dancers, followed by the wrestling tournament. Archery takes place next to the stadium, and the horse races, run by child jockeys over 10–30 km of open steppe, are held outside the city at Khui Doloon Khudag.

Smaller naadams happen in provincial and district centres across the country around the same time, and many travellers find these more relaxed and closer to the action than the crowded stadium.

The whole country is on holiday from 11 to 15 July, so flights, hotels and ger camps fill up months ahead.
