Trains in Mongolia: tickets & routes

Take the overnight sleeper across the steppe, or ride the Trans-Mongolian to Beijing or Russia. Local companies can book your train tickets.

Domestic trains

≈ $15–40 for a sleeper berth (est.)

Overnight sleeper trains run from Ulaanbaatar south to Zamyn-Üüd on the Chinese border, and north to Darkhan, Sükhbaatar and Erdenet. Cheap, slow and a great view of the steppe.

Trans-Mongolian & international trains

Trains link Ulaanbaatar with Beijing, and with Irkutsk and Moscow in Russia. They run only a few times a week and sell out in summer, so book well ahead.

Classes

Most travellers take a 4-berth sleeper compartment; some trains have 2-berth first class, and some domestic trains have cheaper seats. Bring snacks and water; dining cars vary.

Border crossings

On international trains, border checks can take several hours. Check the visa rules for China or Russia before you book.
