Most long-distance buses leave from the Dragon bus station in western Ulaanbaatar; some buses to the east leave from the east side of the city. Check which station when you book.
Shared minivans also run between towns and leave when they're full. Faster than buses on some routes, but less comfortable and with no fixed timetable.
Buses stop in towns, not at the sights: from the town you usually still need a local driver to reach the dunes, lakes or monasteries.
Seats sell out in July and around Naadam and holidays. Buy at least a day ahead, and bring your passport: you may need it to buy a ticket.
