Bayanzag (Flaming Cliffs)

Red sandstone cliffs where the first dinosaur eggs known to science were found in the 1920s.

The American explorer Roy Chapman Andrews named them the Flaming Cliffs after seeing them glow orange at sunset. Expeditions here uncovered Velociraptor, Protoceratops and the first recognised dinosaur eggs.

Today it is an easy walk along the cliff edge with wide views over the Gobi plain, and local sellers offer saxaul-wood crafts.

  • Region: Gobi Desert (Ömnögovi)
  • Best time: May–September, at sunset
  • Time needed: 1–2 hours
  • Entry: Small site fee

Tips

  • Stay on paths at the cliff edge; the sandstone crumbles easily.
  • Fossils are protected: it is illegal to take any.
