Amarbayasgalant Monastery

One of Mongolia's most beautiful monasteries, built in the 1730s in a remote valley.

Built by the Manchu emperor in honour of Zanabazar, Amarbayasgalant is one of the few large monasteries that survived the 1930s. Its symmetrical courtyards and painted roofs sit in a quiet valley, and a small community of monks lives here. It makes a good stop between Ulaanbaatar and Khuvsgul.

  • Region: Khuvsgul & the north (Selenge)
  • Best time: May–October
  • Time needed: Half a day
  • Entry: Entry fee

Tips

  • Climb the hill behind the monastery for the best view.
