Trains link Ulaanbaatar with Beijing, and with Irkutsk and Moscow in Russia. They run only a few times a week and sell out in summer, so book well ahead.
Most travellers take a 4-berth sleeper compartment; some trains have 2-berth first class, and some domestic trains have cheaper seats. Bring snacks and water; dining cars vary.
On international trains, border checks can take several hours. Check the visa rules for China or Russia before you book.
Ulaanbaatar railway station is in the west of the city centre. See Airport pickup & drop-off for a transfer.
